How important is ‘Styling’ for a successful career in Modelling?

“FASHION IS ABOUT DRESSING ACCORDING TO WHAT’S FASHIONABLE. STYLE IS MORE ABOUT BEING YOURSELF.” —OSCAR DE LA RENTA

People have used ‘Styling’ to make a personal statement ever since clothing came into being. It is no different today, especially in the world of glamour and entertainment. While fashion is dressing according to trends prevalent at the time, styling is more of a personal choice where various factors are considered to give a person that ‘signature’ look.

“FASHIONS FADE, STYLE IS ETERNAL.” —YVES SAINT LAURENT

Fashion is something that is constantly changing with the times. What is fashionable today may be looked down upon tomorrow and return to vogue a few decades later. Styling helps you adapt current fashions into something that is uniquely ‘you’! To identify your style, it is important to study several attributes like body shape, height and complexion. The perfectly styled individual will possess the perfect combination of all the above. Once you have identified the most suitable styling template, it is easy to adapt it to suit the latest fashions.

“DON’T BE INTO TRENDS. DON’T MAKE FASHION OWN YOU, BUT YOU DECIDE WHAT YOU ARE, WHAT YOU WANT TO EXPRESS BY THE WAY YOU DRESS AND THE WAY TO LIVE.” —GIANNI VERSACE

The first impression is the best impression. Proper styling helps you project your personality exactly the way you want to. For instance, a certain dress may be all the rage in the fashion world, but it just may not suit you. For that you have to have a good idea about styling.

“THE DRESS MUST FOLLOW THE BODY, NOT THE BODY FOLLOWING THE SHAPE OF THE DRESS.” —HUBERT DE GIVENCHY

It is important to identify your body type before you decide what will look good on you. Broadly these can be classified as  Apple Shape, Hourglass Shape, Pear Shape, Rectangle Shape and  Inverted Triangle Shape.

Apple Shape: Go for structured pieces that add definition and conceal any extra weight.

Hourglass Shape: Styling helps you highlight natural curves and proportionately balance both upper and lower body. You can draw attention to your well defined waist.

Pear Shape: Stay away from garments that draw attention to the hips and thighs.

Rectangle Shape: Create the illusion of curves and a defined waist.

Inverted Triangle Shape: Skirts or trousers with in light or bold colours will balance out your body shape.

Besides styles that addresses your body type, colours, patterns and designs also add to the style quotient. Warm colours exhibit energy and joy and are ideal  for Casual Clothing. They also make you appear slimmer than you actually are. Cool colours convey calmness and peace and are best suited for Formal Dressing. Prints are one of those cyclical trends that never go out of style. Florals, geometric and animal prints are ideal for summer. Vertical stripes make petite women taller and plus size women slimmer.
